Ingredients
2/3 cup warm milk
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 packet (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 teaspoons salt
3 cups unbleached flour
1 egg
Preparation
Step 1
Combine warm milk, sugar, warm water, and yeast in a large bowl or a stand mixer. Whisk to combine and let the mixture sit until foamy.
Step 2
Add the flour, salt, and melted butter. Mix everything together until dough forms and starts to pull away from the bowl's sides.
Step 3
Hand knead the dough for about 8 minutes, until it is elastic and smooth, on a surface that has been lightly dusted with flour. Using a stand mixer to continue kneading the dough until it becomes smooth is another option.
Step 4
Place the dough in a basin that has been very lightly greased, cover it, and keep it warm. Allow the dough to rise for one to one and a half hours, or until it has nearly doubled in size.
Step 5
Deflate the dough and place it on a surface that is lightly oiled.
Step 6
The dough should be gently pressed into a wide circle. Then, pull in one edge of the dough at an angle 2/3 of the way. Press down with your knuckles. Pull in the other edge at an angle, overlapping the first edge to create a tall triangle. Press down with your knuckles again.
Step 7
Starting at the dough's thinnest part, roll it into a long log. After each round, make sure to seal the edges with a gentle press.
Step 8
Lay the dough in a loaf pan that has been lightly greased, seam side down. The dough should be covered with a moist kitchen towel and let to rise until it is about 1 inch above the loaf pan.
Step 9
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Add a teaspoon of water and a sprinkle of salt to the egg and lightly beat. Brush the top of the loaf with egg wash.
Step 10
Decrease the oven heat to 350 degrees F. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 35-40 minutes.
Step 11
Serve warm or let cool first. Toast can be served on its own, with eggs, nut butters, or any other desirable sides. Enjoy!
